Syllabus Each five-week period will consist of the following basic requirements in addition to activities, exercises and assignments which will be allocated points as they are given: 100 First Formal Speech 100 Second Formal Speech 100 Class Participation (“Mini” Speeches and Exercises) 100 Formal Written Critique (see critique format on the following page) This may be a self-assessment or a critique of a speech by a fellow student or heard in class, on television, etc. Required Speeches Theme Box Speech Delivering Famous Speech Speech Requiring Research }Persuasive Speech** Scripted Speech }Demonstration Speech* Memorized Speech }Informative Speech Speech for a Specified Audience Other Than High School Students Panel Discussion Commencement Speech The Commencement Speech will serve as both the last speech for the marking period and the final exam. *Required **Required and a second Persuasive Speech can be done in place of the Informative Speech Critique Format Your critiques should be typed, be double-spaced, and include a title page. Paragraph One: Introduction 1. Identify the speaker, topic, time, place and occasion 2. Don’t be boring! Paragraph Two: Assess the Speaker’s Overall Effectiveness 1. Was the speech engaging? 2. Did the speaker accomplish his/her purpose? 3. Assess the audience’s response. Paragraph Three: Assess the Content of the Speech 1. Use the “General Assessment for Speeches” criteria under both “Meaning” and “Organization” when assessing the speech’s content. Paragraph Four: Assess the Speaker’s Delivery 1. Use the “General Assessment for Speeches” criteria under “Vocal Delivery,” “Language,” and “Body Language” when assessing the speaker’s delivery. Paragraph Five: Recommendations to the Speaker 1. What could the speaker do better in preparing his/her speech? 2. What could the speaker do better in delivering his/her speech? Paragraph Six: Conclusion |
