EXTRA GOODIES

What Has 1½ Dimensions?

Fractal geometry is an intriguing new branch of mathematics. We've all heard the buzz and seen the pretty pictures, but just what is a fractal anyway? We'll explore the features of fractal objects, see that they are all around us (and within us!), and come to understand the intriguing concept of non-integral dimension. No fancy math needed – just an open mind

Why Fibonacci?

We all love to show our students that the Fibonacci numbers occur frequently in nature. True, it's really cool, but did you ever wonder why? That insight combines elements of human perception, evolution, and the most irrational number.

Derangements

Ten people seal their signatures inside identical envelopes, and then shuffle them. You flex your psychic powers by trying to return each envelope to its owner. WhatÕs the probability at least one person gets the right envelope back? In tackling that question, weÕll encounter some interesting mathematics – with 3 punchlines!

Financial Planning with a TI

What will my car payment be? How much do I still owe on my mortgage? How long before I can retire? Use the TIÕs Finance App to teach your students (and yourself?) some financial planning skills.
