Our Website Has Moved

notice, you have an out-of-date bookmark.
While we have had the TompkinsCortlandScouts.org domain name for many
years, we never really had a place to put the website. The domain was
actually just an alias for some other website. So, every time you
accessed TompkinsCortlandScouts.org, some other address appeared in your
browser's address bar - mostly, home.htva.net/~wb2jwd/,
which is the space my cable company gave me, but sometimes www.bpmlegal.com,
my office website - and if you bookmarked the site, you wound up
bookmarking the actual address, not TompkinsCortlandScouts.org. Worse,
htva.net only gave me 20MB of storage space, total, so we were very
limited in how much we could post on that site.
Thanks to Mark Travis of Pack 197 and Good News Computing, the
Taughannock District Website now has a real home, and oodles of space to
live in (one "oodle" = several gigabytes). And, thanks to a
suggestion from Oliver Habich of Troop 4, we also have a shorter,
easier-to-type domain - TCScouts.org
- two names, the same website.
What this means to you is:
- Old Bookmarks won't be right:
If you have any bookmarks in your browser for any of the pages in
the Taughannock District Website, they probably point to the actual
site of the old page, not the new site. So, you'll need to...
- Change your Bookmarks: At least in Firefox or IE, that means
right-clicking on the bookmark, click on "Properties" and
change the part of the address which says "home.htva.net/~wb2jwd/"
or "www.bpmlegal.com"
to --www.TCScouts.org-- or --www.TompkinsCortlandScouts.org--
(either will work, if you're lazy like me, use the shorter one). The
rest of the address remains the same.
So, "http://home.htva.net/~wb2jwd/announce.htm"
becomes --http://www.TCScouts.org/announce.htm --
- Or, save new bookmarks:
If you don't want to edit your old bookmark, you can always follow
one of these links http://www.TompkinsCortlandScouts.org
or http://www.TCScouts.org
, find the page you want, and save a new bookmark.
- The old website will be taken down
after January 1st, and all of the pages will be set to redirect to
the new server. So if you don't update your bookmarks now, now you
can always follow the forwarding link and save a new bookmark later
on.

The BSA has a range of Scouting programs for you and your son
or daughter. We have a web page for each program - use the links below, or
click on one of the blue buttons at the left to go to these pages:
- Cub Scouts a family-oriented program designed
specifically to address the needs of younger boys in first through fifth grades.
- Boy Scouts is for boys age 11 through age 17
(or at least 10½ and completed fifth grade),
designed to achieve the aims of Scouting through a vigorous outdoor
program and peer group leadership with the counsel of an adult
Scoutmaster.
- Venturing, Sea Scouts and Exploring are for boys and girls
ages 14 through 20 (or age 13 and completed eighth grade). Venturing
provides positive experiences through exciting and meaningful
youth-run activities that help members pursue their special interests,
grow by teaching others, and develop leadership skills. Exploring is a
career- or vocation-oriented program, with each post specializing in a
specific field.
The Baden-Powell Council provides Scouting to a six-county area -
Broome, Chemung, Cortland, Tioga and Tompkins County in central New York
and Susquehanna County in northern Pennsylvania. The Taughannock
District covers Cortland and Tompkins Counties, serving over 1,000 youth
members in fifty Scout units - Cub Packs, Scout Troops, Venture Crews
and Explorer Posts. You can find all of the Scouting units in our

Taughannock District Members
and Volunteers
The pages on our District website have been arranged so
that they are organized in the same way as the District itself. You can
use the list below, or click on one of the buttons on the left and at
the top of each page, to go directly to a specific page. If you want to
find something and aren't sure what page it's on, look at our Site
Map index.
General Pages: The District Committee and
District Key Three oversee the Scouting program in the District in a
general way, so we start with a collection of pages which are of general
applicability to all members and volunteers. These pages can be reached
using the red buttons on the left of each page.

announcements! You can find all of the latest news here, with
links to the pages with the full details.

District Calendar - Our
District plans its Scouting activities on an eighteen-month basis,
so that we will always have at least a year's advance notice of
upcoming events. Our calendar also includes listings for Council and
National events which might be of interest to District
volunteers.
- Contact List - You can find an
Organization Chart of District-level Scouters and Committees on this
page, along with contact information. Look here for the
"generic" e-mail addresses for some district functions,
leaders and committees.
- Forms and Links - This page provides links
to downloadable forms and to other websites with useful information
for Scouters. Look here for resources such as Roundtable
handouts and notes, informational flyers, etc.
- District Scrapbook - take a look at
what our members have been doing!
Specific Pages: Taughannock District works through its
volunteer-run committees. If you need information on a specific topic,
these pages, which can be reached through the links below or the yellow
buttons on the left of each page, are organized in the same way as the
District itself:
- Activities - The Activities Committee
is in charge of District Activities for Cubs, Scouts and Venturing.
Look here for information on Pinewood Derbies, Cub Weekends, Scout
Camporees, Mall Shows, and so on. Where appropriate, we'll also have
information on Council Activities and High Adventure opportunities
of interest to District members.
- Advancement and Recognition - The
Advancement program is part of all Scouting programs - Cub Scouts,
Boy Scouts and Venturing. Look here for information on rank
advancement, Cub Activity Badges, Scout Eagle Projects and Boards of
Review, merit badge counselors, etc. This page also has information
on recognition awards for adult Scouters - training awards, Spark
Plugs and District Awards of Merit, Veteran Scouter pins, and the
various square knots.
- Camping - The Camping Committee is
tasked with promoting organized camping programs for Cubs and
Scouts. Look here for information on Cub Day Camps and Resident
Camps and Boy Scout Summer Camp.
- Communications - This Committee is
responsible for internal communications within the district, as well
as public relations. Look here for information on publicizing your
unit's activities or to sign up for the Taughannock Announce
District e-mail list.
- Commissioners - The Commissioner
Corps is a group of experienced veteran Scouters supporting our
District's packs, troops, crews and posts. Unit Commissioners work
directly with unit leaders, Roundtable Commissioners lead our
monthly Roundtables. This page provides information for and about
Taughannock District Commissioners.
- Fundraising - The Finance Committee
organizes the fundraising events by which our District raises money
for District and Council operations. Look here for information on
Friends of Scouting campaigns, Popcorn Sales, Distinguished Citizen
Awards Dinners, etc.
- Training - All Leaders should be
trained. The Training Committee works toward this goal by providing
training courses for Cub, Scout and Venturing leaders (including
youth leaders at the Scout and Venturing levels). Look here for
information on training courses offered at the District and Council
level, at the annual University of Scouting, and online through MyScouting.org.
